An Online comic that gives form to nature as a human figure, inviting reflection on the systems we live in and the environment that sustains them.
What is the comic about?
Mother Earth, embodied in human shape, appears among us. This comic offers a narrative intervention, revealing how our economic models and societal habits all rest on a single, fragile foundation: a stable and thriving biosphere. It’s an invitation to remember that the ground beneath our feet is not simply a resource but a relationship. In a world where profit is extolled like prophecy, MAGNA MATER offers a quieter truth: even the most powerful systems depend on something soft, green, and ephemeral. With tenderness and tenacity, she invites us to reconsider our role, not as nature’s masters, but as its kin, its successors, its children. With quiet strength and fierce compassion, she challenges the illusion of control, calling for a shift: From domination to connection. From extraction to regeneration. The question is no longer whether change is needed, but whether we’re willing to change in time.
The role of storytelling
Scientific research shows that storytelling is a powerful way to engage with complexity. It activates more cognitive and emotional regions of the brain than facts alone, fostering empathy, memory retention, and reflection. This project explores how visual storytelling can support ecological literacy and systems thinking by translating abstract challenges into emotionally resonant, visually accessible narratives.
So what’s next?
The Online Comic will continue at irregular intervals. In episode two, Magna Mater shows up in the city. She wants to know: how are we actually living in these bodies of breath, nerves, and wonder? She observes with care, trying to understand how humans use the vast spectrum of senses and abilities that lie within them. How do we relate to our bodies in a time characterized by acceleration, abstraction and decoupling?
